Eight DIY jobs you can actually do yourself

Do you spend your nights quivering in fear at the prospect of a DIY project? Are there loads of things you wish you could change, but don’t have the confidence to?

Well fear no more.

We have put together a list of eight DIY jobs you CAN actually do yourself and once you get started there’ll be no looking back!

1 – Make a headboard

Making your own headboard is a great way to get creative and save money. You’ll find loads of great ideas online from old doors, to wooden planks, just imagine transforming your bedroom without even putting your hand in your pocket.

2 – Bleed a radiator

Hear people talking about ‘Bleeding your radiators’ but haven’t got a clue where to start? Bleeding radiators is when you release air that has become trapped inside as trapped air causes the radiators to have cold spots, reducing the efficiency of them. You can pick up a ‘rad-key’ from any good DIY store – simple!

If bleeding it doesn’t fix the problem, then maybe it’s time to get a new radiator. Providing you get one of the same size and shape as the one you’re replacing it’s quite easy to do and these days there’s lots of help online to show you how to do it.

3 – Get good at grouting

If your bathroom tiles are looking a bit grotty and tired, then why not re-grout them? Yes we know it’s not an exciting task, but they’ll look so much better – check out a previous handy guide on First Home News guide on becoming an expert that would make even Nick Knowles from ‘DIY SOS’ proud!

4 – Fix that leaking tap!

The main cause of a leaky tap is a worn out washer. A lot of modern taps come with a ceramic washer, but many will have the rubber kind that can wear out pretty quickly. Turn your water supply off at the ‘stop-cock’ before unscrewing the tap handle, removing the washer and replacing it with a new one.

5 – Spruce up interior doors

If you’re a Pinterest fan you’ll have seen loads of cool ideas for doing this on the cheap. From painting half of a door at a jaunty angle, to turning one into a chalkboard, a custom paint job can make a huge difference, so get creative!

6 – Disguise your television

You may think that turning your TV into a DIY project is a bit weird, but it’s all the rage apparently. Lots of designers are now making frames for televisions and it’s definitely a project that you can DIY – make a feature of that flat-screen.  We love putting a rustic wooden frame around a mounted flat screen TV, it’ll not only look attractive but it’s a great talking piece.

7 – Personalise your doormat

A quirky way of introducing people to your home is with a personalised door mat. Just pick up a cheap plain mat from any DIY shop and a small tin of paint, make a stencil with your personal message and invite guests into your home in whatever way suits you best.

8 – Install an eco-friendly showerhead

Not only is this a simple DIY job, but one that could save you a wedge on your water bill. Available from most plumbing outlets, an eco-showerhead could save you around 30% more than the standard kind and they’re really simple to install.

If bleeding it doesn’t fix the problem, then maybe it’s time to get a new radiator. Providing you get one of the same size and shape as the one you’re replacing it’s quite easy to do and these days there’s lots of help online to show you how to do it.
